Anglerfish for sailors
This is a quick version of an idea my brain came up with late one night a few months ago. It made more sense then, when I doodled it into my sketchbook. Last night I decided to bring the idea into Photoshop for a quick version. Essentially it's how I envisioned a sea monster lures it's prey.

Quick post
I just haven't put anything here in a little while. Time for a quick update.
About 3 1/2 years ago, Jeremy Cranford (an art director at Blizzard at the time) gave an assignment to my illustration class taught by Ron Spears. In that class I used what limited skill I had at the time to create a painting of Anub'arak, a giant beetle-ish boss from World of Warcraft.
Vaeflare, a community manager from Blizzard, contacted me late last year about posting the image. I thought it was just going into a fanart gallery somewhere, but it turns out they used it as one of the 5 fan-created pieces in a news update of the main site for Heroes of the Storm (about halfway down this page). I'm flattered, of course, but I've grown so much since then that I feel a need to represent myself a bit better! An illustration of one of the heroes they haven't covered yet is in the works.
Life has me in a tight spot at the moment. We all have times like it, when we are back on our heels and have to take effort away from what we want just to get by for the meantime. Just haven't caught a break yet despite my efforts!
Anyway, here's a photo study/practice whatever you want to call it. Original photo is here.

More Blizzard
Just sketching around. I haven't gotten to just sit down and really work on stuff lately, so I wanted to make myself do SOMEthing after work today. Just watched the 5th episode of the mini-series Lords of War from Blizzard, this one about one of my favorite characters in the lore, Vindicator Maraad. Took about 3 hours and started in on a piece I might develop more later. Here's a crop, hope you enjoy.

Been loving the Lords of War mini-series to get everybody pumped about Warlords of Draenor. The art style and animation for that series, coupled with some GREAT back story, is inspiring me to do a little fanart. This is just a 45 min sketch for tonight after work.

More work on this dragon, soon to re-crop and show hints of the cave he's in. Not showing the characters yet...they will be a reveal at the end :)
Also some owl I sketched at work. I'm kinda limited on what I can do while I'm there, but I do what I can.
Scales and light
So far about 3 hours into this. I might be using this as part of another piece, I'm not sure yet...but if nothing else, it's been fun to work on. I'm trying to use some techniques I've observed from random videos of some of my favorite illustrators. Hope you like dragons :)
Trip and fall
So, a few illustrators from the university I've been attending went on a little illustrator road trip recently up to Washington state. We got to meet with several companies and people that relate directly or indirectly to our majors. Our fearless leader and peer Ann Middleton wrote up all the details in several posts on her blog.
I have yet to borrow a friend with a good camera to capture some of the traditional things I've done lately, but I'll post a few bad pictures here so you'll know I'm not COMPLETELY lazy.
This is the start of a project to bring some of my favorite characters from a webcomic to life. 10 points if you guess what webcomic!
This will have the halfling there redone, then finished with ink, then scanned back into Photoshop to fully paint it.

Nothing too special, just a quick doodle while I was at work to show a friend how to break down pictures into large, then smaller and smaller shapes to get the picture you want.
Soon: graphite and new ideas
I am not dead! Figuring out graduation and everything that goes with it, moving, struggling to pay bills...but not dead! In fact I have three big graphite drawings and an acrylic piece I desperately want to show you from this last semester, but I need to get them photographed properly.
I have some interesting projects lining up a little at a time, some for the portfolio and some (yay!) for potential client work. I also need to prepare some decent pieces to take with me on a trip up to Seattle to visit some artists and companies (and a friend I've been missing).

Very tired, so I'm keeping this short. My senior show is coming up very soon, and I've been working extra hard to have a couple good pieces to contribute. I thought I'd give some previews of what I've done so far. These are cropped pieces of works in various stages of completion.
Moar shells
A little of everything
So, here are a few things I've done lately. The first two are for classes, a weekly drawing study of a shell and progress on an oil painting. The second two are personal, a knight I started sketching for no reason in particular and a fanart of Grom Hellscream because, well, it's Grom :)
Graphite study of the shell I'm "married" to this semester. 5.5 x 7.5 inches
WIP, oil painting, based on a collage of random pictures snipped from magazines. About 18 x 24 inches. Hopefully will be done in the next week or so!
Digital, just messing around. Who knows, maybe there will be a background and other subject matter one day.
Digital, originally a color study to use for a mixed media piece, but I just kept going. Now that it's this far, I feel like I should finish it. And then still do it with mixed media, of course.
